BEHIND THE HARD HAT: ALEX N.

SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEER | Problem-Solving Powerhouse | Mini M&M Connoisseur

At Richard, we believe the best builders start with curiosity—and Alex is living proof. From childhood LEGO obsessions to coordinating complex 3D models, he's bringing fresh energy, unstoppable determination, and a "there's always a solution" mindset to every challenge that comes his way.

Built Different from the Start

Alex's construction story begins where many great ones do—with a kid who couldn't stop asking "how is that made?" Couple that natural curiosity with a serious LEGO habit, and you've got the making of a future builder.

"I was always curious about how things were constructed," he says. "But it wasn't until my first CAD/BIM class in junior high that I knew this was it. From that point on, I was set on solving challenging problems and utilizing BIM along the way."

Trial by Fire—And He Came Out Swinging

Every builder remembers their first big test. For Alex, it was a mental health unit renovation that could have broken a less determined coordinator. The design-build project required a fully coordinated 3D model between all major trades—but when Alex dug into the plans, he discovered they were riddled with more than 2,700 conflicts.

"Instead of throwing in the towel and going back to the design team, which would have significantly prolonged and delayed the project, I decided to proceed with extensive BIM coordination with our trades," he says. "As a team, we were able to resolve all conflicts, provide the facility with a working solution, and experienced no coordination issues during installation."

Talk about rising to the occasion.

The Power of Seeing Before Building

Alex isn't just passionate about BIM—he's evangelical about it. And for good reason.

"This tool allows us to see the building in a virtual setting, correct issues long before we get to site, and provide a model that can continuously be updated as changes and improvements are made," he explains. "I believe this helps significantly streamline processes."

It's this forward-thinking approach that makes Alex invaluable on every project he touches.

Never Say Never

Beyond the technical skills, Alex brings something that can't be taught: an unshakeable belief that every problem has a solution.

"I do not back down from any challenge, even if it may seem impossible," he says. "There is always a solution that can be found, and I always bring that mentality to every team I am a part of."

Purpose-Built for Impact

When Alex looks at a completed project, he doesn't just see buildings—he sees the lives that will be touched inside those walls.

"It's about the people and the impact I can deliver to a facility or community," he says. "It brings me a great sense of gratitude knowing the work I do can positively impact a person or group of people, whether it's from the care they receive or a place they can call home. It brings me the 'purpose' in being a 'purpose builder.'"

Fuel for the Journey

Working from HQ has its perks—like access to Chef Nikki's legendary meals. But when Alex needs that extra boost? "Mini M&Ms hit the spot."

And to keep the creative juices flowing all day? "Coffee or tea—caffeinated, of course. Whenever I start dragging in the second half of the day, I like to go for a walk outside to clear and reset the mind."

"Always ask questions—it's okay to not know the answer. You might learn something important that will have you better prepared when it comes up in the future." – Alex N.
