MRI SUITE BUILDOUT
Scope
Renovation of 6,100 SF across multiple floors of Building 200 at Edward J. Hines VAMC in Chicago, IL, to create a new MRI suite, administrative offices, patient rooms, and support areas. The project required demolition of an existing oncology clinic and performing phased new construction, including significant MEP, IT, and structural upgrades.
Purpose
Critical Diagnostic Services for Veterans: Richard’s mission was to transform the former oncology clinic into a state-of-the-art MRI suite and patient-focused care environment while keeping hospital operations fully active. The facility also served as a main IT corridor, requiring exceptionally high levels of coordination to maintain critical hospital communication systems throughout construction.
Project Challenges
Structural complexity: A 72-hour continuous shift was required to demolish two 18-inch walls for MRI transport, followed by precise reassembly of the building envelope.
Occupied facility: Work took place around active hospital corridors, requiring phased construction and infection control to ensure zero disruption to patient care.
Systems integration: New fire protection, HVAC tied to JCI Metasys, telecom, medical gases, and antimicrobial finishes demanded precise coordination of multiple trades.
Project progress
Delivered early and safely: Completed three weeks ahead of schedule with zero safety incidents, including during the high-risk 72-hour demolition phase.
Enhanced patient experience: Delivered a modern MRI suite with expanded scan room, specialty lighting, and patient-focused design features to improve comfort and accessibility.
Client recognition: Awarded an “Exceptional” CPARS rating by the Department of Veterans Affairs for outstanding execution and coordination.
