MRI SUITE BUILDOUT
Purpose
Renovation of 6,100 SF across multiple floors of Building 200 at Edward J. Hines VA Medical Center in Chicago, IL, to create a new MRI suite, administrative offices, patient rooms, and support areas. The project transformed a former oncology clinic into a state-of-the-art diagnostic environment that delivers critical imaging services to veterans. Richard performed phased demolition and new construction, including extensive MEP, IT, and structural upgrades. The space also served as a main IT corridor for the hospital, requiring careful coordination to maintain critical communication systems and ensure uninterrupted hospital operations throughout construction.
Project Challenges
Structural complexity: A 72-hour continuous shift was required to demolish two 18-inch walls for MRI transport, followed by precise reassembly of the building envelope.
Occupied facility: Work took place around active hospital corridors, requiring phased construction and infection control to ensure zero disruption to patient care.
Systems integration: New fire protection, HVAC tied to JCI Metasys, telecom, medical gases, and antimicrobial finishes demanded precise coordination of multiple trades.
Project progress
Delivered early and safely: Completed three weeks ahead of schedule with zero safety incidents, including during the high-risk 72-hour demolition phase.
Enhanced patient experience: Delivered a modern MRI suite with expanded scan room, specialty lighting, and patient-focused design features to improve comfort and accessibility.
Client recognition: Awarded an “Exceptional” CPARS rating by the Department of Veterans Affairs for outstanding execution and coordination.
