In Memoriam: Bill Ernstrom, 1945–2025

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Bill Ernstrom, a respected member of the Richard Board of Advisors and a valued friend and mentor to many within our organization.

Bill was one of the most influential figures in construction law and brought more than three decades of leadership, insight, and integrity to the industry. In 1984, he founded Ernstrom & Dreste, a national construction and surety law firm that supported major contractors across the country through complex negotiations and dispute resolution. He later served as General Counsel at Alberici Corporation and most recently as Vice President of Major Strategic Projects at Walsh Construction, where he advanced significant national initiatives and helped shape the future of design-build and joint venture delivery.

Throughout his career, Bill earned broad recognition for his contributions to the construction industry. In 1998, the Associated General Contractors of America named him “Chairman of the Year,” and in 2003 he received the International Risk Management Institute’s “Words of Wisdom” (WOW) award. He was also an active member of the Associated General Contractors of America and the American Bar Association.

Bill joined the Richard Board of Advisors in 2021. From the beginning, he offered steady guidance and thoughtful counsel that helped shape our values, strengthen our long-term strategy, and support the growth of our people and our company. His insight and generosity made a meaningful impact on Richard, and he will always be remembered for the leadership and clarity he brought to every conversation.

We extend our deepest condolences to Bill’s family, friends, and colleagues. We are grateful for the time we were able to learn from him, and we honor his legacy by carrying forward the principles he exemplified: integrity, collaboration, and a commitment to building work that makes a difference.
